Subject:
the most important psychological discovery of the last 100 years
Hi there!
Howie Jacobson here, from Plant Yourself. I wanted to make sure you found out about my podcast conversation with Bruce Ecker, co-originator of Coherence Therapy.
Lots of people have created therapeutic modalities, so while that’s a big deal, it’s probably not the biggest.
What really sets Bruce’s work apart is his relentless quest for a unifying theory of transformational change.
Which is to say, if there are hundreds of different ways of doing therapy, and all of them work some of the time (and most don’t!), then how do we know what works, and how to get it to happen reliably?
Bruce and his colleagues spent decades searching for unifying factors. Studying successful cases and looking for a common underlying process.
And by the mid 1990s they had one, and developed Coherence Therapy (which then had a different and much-harder-to-remember name: Depth Oriented Brief Therapy).
But they still didn’t understand the biological underpinnings of their methodology.
What was happening in the brain in those moments of profound and utter transformation? When life-long problems evaporated? When longstanding patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting were nullified?
Then, in 2005, lightning struck.
Bruce found out about the brain science of memory reconsolidation.
And was the first to apply it to psychotherapy.
His book, Unlocking the Emotional Brain, explains it all. It’s worth a read, even though it’s quite dense and written for advanced therapists.
Our conversation brings the science of memory reconsolidation to life, so even I can understand it!
