I’ve been trying to get Peter Levine, creator of Somatic Experiencing(tm), on the show for years and years. And last month, my dream came true, as he and I chatted about his life and career and his new book, An Autobiography of Trauma: A Healing Journey.
I learned two things that surprised the hell out of me:
That Peter had experienced almost unimaginable trauma in his own childhood
And that his very scientific-sounding, rigorously documented work had been deeply shaped by a host of spiritual experiences and understandings
I asked my buddy Glenn Livingston to help me chat about how to bring about transformational change in people. After about 10 minutes of me spouting theory, Glenn said that he got it in theory, but wanted to see the process in action.
And he offered to let me demo the methodology on him! Talk about generosity and vulnerability! We worked on Glenn’s reluctance to start publishing videos to his YouTube channel because he was a few pounds heavier than he had been last time he’d posted.
What neither of us expected was how deep the work would go.
I’m making the leap from being all about “Plant Yourself” - which originally referred exclusively to a plant-based lifestyle, but has come to signify for me being grounded in principles and systems that nourish human life and planetary regeneration - to including “Uplift Others.”
That is, once we’re planted, now what?
The way I see it, once we’re in a good place personally, we have the privilege of giving others a hand up.
So my practice is overtly shifting to have impact at scale - at organizational levels.
The work I’ve done over the past 4 years, bringing cutting-edge coaching methodology to the public and leaders via my book, You Can Change Other People (and in retrospect, not a great title!), will be taking center stage in what I talk about, write about, and practice with clients.
This newsletter is getting a makeover as a weekly reflection on how leaders can bring out the best in the people around them. It’s also up on Substack (subscribe free here) and LinkedIn (check it out here) if either of those platforms are how you prefer to consume your newsletters.
I welcome your feedback, and look forward to many fruitful conversations about how we can work together to make the world a more nourishing, just, and joyful place.
Warmly Howie
