Today's podcast guest is a dear friend, Lani Muelrath, who's been on the show each drop she drops a new book (and a couple of times for no good reason other than there's always a good reason).
Apps and books promote mindfulness practices to help us focus, be more productive, lose weight, and stop smoking.
And all that's great.
But, as Lani observes, there's a danger in viewing mindfulness as a means to accomplish egoic ends. Even if those ends are admirable, like getting healthy and getting more done, there's still a sense of "what's in it for me?"
And mindfulness, as it's practiced in the traditions where it originated, is all about the greater good for all.
So we talk about mindfulness, not simply as a value-neutral "productivity hack," but as a means of developing compassion and a GPS for "right action" in the world.
Yesterday I put the finishing touches on the full layout of the manuscript. Aside from an errant quotation mark and a missing space between a period and the next sentence, it was perfect! (If I may say so myself ;)
Seriously, I'm really happy with how it's turned out. And now that it's nine weeks away from publication, I've got to get my ass in gear to start promoting the book, and supporting the community of readers that I hope will be multitudinous. (Wow, Google's spell checker was OK with "multitudinous"; I was sure I was making that up.)
To that end, I've created a Facebook group for the book. It's completely devoid of content right now, except for the banner that I spent way too much time designing, but it will be a repository of resources and conversation about the Four Steps, and how to apply them to help the people around you improve their lives.
And if you're looking for executive coaching from the co-author of the future bestseller, You CAN Change Other People, well it just so happens that I do that too. But you gotta email me (or reply to this email) to find out more. Very hush-hush...
To your good health,
Howie
